Tryout Dates & Times
- FALL Tryout – September 22, 2024
If your athlete is interested in trying out for the VA House of Speed and meets the prerequisites below (for Commitment & Tryout Times, see below), please reach out to Coach Tanya by emailing: tanya@vahouseofspeed.com – with information like age, event interests, and current PR times.
Tryout Day Procedures
Tryout LOCATION
Tryouts occur at local area high school tracks, like West Springfield High School or Lake Braddock Secondary School. Exact locations and times will be sent via email.
Tryout Day
On the tryout day, athletes will work out with current VA House of Speed athletes in groups of their chosen discipline (sprints, distance, or field events).
There is no charge/fee for tryouts.
Field Events
Athletes trying field events will be evaluated not only for distance but also for their form, technique, and potential.
Time Trials
Athletes will be given a time trial and must meet the below (prerequisite) time standards at the official time trial.
Evaluation
Coaches will evaluate athletes on the following:
- Athletic and mental maturity
- Cohesion with the team
- Ability to train with current House of Speed members
- Ability to complete the workout
- Family commitment to the program
Athletes who fail to meet the standard or fail to complete the workout to standard will be permitted to try again at the next VA House of Speed tryout cycle.
Tryout Results
Tryout Lists
If athletes successfully pass the time trial and the practice evaluation, they will be added to the list of possible House of Speed athletes.
Athletes will be taken based on their speed, with a preference to maintain a roughly 1:1 gender ratio and even distribution of ages.
A max of approximately 15 athletes is permitted on the distance team and a max of approximately 30 athletes on the sprint/middle distance/field event team.
If athletes are not taken off the list in the current cycle, they will remain on the list for one full year and may be considered for entrance into the program at any time within that year.

AAU FEE
Players will have to also register with AAU.
AAU registration fee is $18 – $30 for the year payable through AAU.
UNIFORM FEE
The $60 Uniform Fee is separate and is due upon registration for participants who don’t already have a uniform set.
TRAVEL FEES
All travel is the responsibility of the athlete/parent. Group rates are available for hotels for certain multiday events like AAU Indoor Championships, Districts, Regionals, & Junior Olympics.
PREREQUISITES
Commitment
VA House of Speed expects maximum effort, attendance and sportsmanship from their athletes.
Attitude
We require athletes to sign a Code of Conduct committing to our team goals. We also require parents to sign an honor pledge committing to our team goals.

Timeliness: Athletes must be on time. Tardiness can lead to injuries to the student-athlete because they miss warm-ups and stretches.
High School Students are encouraged and welcome. They must meet qualifying standards and commit to Summer AAU Districts and Regionals (if the athlete qualifies).
Year-Round Practice
Athletes must attend scheduled practices as listed, (unless otherwise excused by the Head Coach).
Outdoor Season: March – August, with AAU Junior Olympics in late July, early August. and followed by Fall Conditioning.
Indoor Season: Winter Conditioning builds to AAU Indoor Championships in March.
Weekly Practice is 3 days per week, usually
- Tuesday – PM
- Wednesday – PM
- Friday – PM
We understand most student-athletes also compete in other sports, so flexibility is given to the best extent possible in coordination with VAHoS coaches.
Meets & Competition
Athletes must commit to competing in the majority of seasonal and local VAHoS meets listed on our schedule.
Must commit to competing at the highest levels:
- Indoor Nationals (early March)
- Summer AAU Districts (mid-June)
- Summer AAU Regionals (mid-late June)
- *Junior Olympics (late July-early August & requires travel) *if athlete qualifies.
Tryout Standards – Running Times
Potential athletes must meet one of the following standards listed below by age group in a recreational meet or self-time time trial. Competition times can be researched through the AAU website.
2024 AAU District times below show the top time in the entire state from combining (2) District Meets. Each year, two Districts meets are run on different days; offering the many teams throughout the Commonwealth an opportunity to qualify for AAU Regionals.
8 & under
